Relationship Dramedy that Revolves Around Birth Control; Same year that marks the 50th Anniversary of the Birth Control Pill

NEW YORK, July 06, 2010 | SHOOT Publicity Wire | — The only film to ever tackle the effects that the birth control pill has on a relationship began production in NYC on June 26, 2010. The dramedy is produced and directed by J.C. Khoury, an award winning commercial director whose work is in the permanent collection of the MoMA. The film stars Noah Bean (Damages), Rachel Boston (500 Days of Summer), Anna Chlumsky (In the Loop), Dreama Walker (Gossip Girl), and Al Thompson (The Royal Tenenbaums). Bean plays a man who’s worried that he’s gotten a free-spirited woman (Boston) pregnant after an unprotected one-night stand. The following morning, he decides to feign romantic interest and stick by her side for twelve hours to make sure she takes both doses of the morning-after pill.

Khoury wrote the script based on a semi-autobiographical experience: “I had a scare that led to the purchase of the morning after pill, which I learned was actually two pills that had to be taken twelve hours apart. I right away thought that this would make a great ticking clock in a film.”

The film is being produced by Khoury’s Shoot First Entertainment. Lindsay Chag served as the casting director. Commercial producer Trevor Herrick co-produces and commercial and fashion DP Andreas von Scheele serves as the film’s cinematographer. The film is being shot on HD with the Canon 5D Mark II, supplied by K&M Camera in NYC.

‘My Girl’ star Anna Chlumsky all grown up

How Chicagoan Anna Chlumsky lost and found her love of acting

Yes, the woman said “In the Loop”: the sharp-tongued political satire that had just debuted at the festival, and not “My Girl,” the kiddie weepie that made the Chicago-area native a star when she was 11 years old.

“I was just like, ‘Oh, my God, I’m so happy,’” Chlumsky recalls over coffee and pastry at her favorite little French cafe in the Chelsea neighborhood.

Although “My Girl” came out in 1991, the year after “Home Alone” turned co-star Macaulay Culkin into a kid icon, Chlumsky says strangers still ask almost daily whether she’s that girl — nevermind that she has since abandoned acting, graduated from the University of Chicago and briefly pursued careers in food writing and book publishing before attempting a comeback.

And nevermind that — brace yourselves — the cherub-faced, puffy-lipped kid in “My Girl” will turn 30 this year.

To those fans, “I look just the same,” she says with a laugh.

Well, she’s still on the petite side, with those dramatic blue eyes and pouty mouth, but as she walks into the cafe in her black T-shirt and jeans, she projects the casual elegance of a woman who has grown to feel at home in New York City. Her supporting role as a diplomat’s brainy aide in “In the Loop,” released last year to critical acclaim, was a high point in the relatively new, not-quite-above-the-radar adult phase of her acting career, which also has included some TV series appearances and off-Broadway roles.

She says she has no regrets about “My Girl” and all of the fame it brought her at such a young age, but now she feels like she’s really acting, as opposed to when she was “in that kid mode of ‘say the lines right, and you’ll do fine.’”

“What’s interesting about Anna is she did the child acting and then very consciously decided to go into the outside world and get a dose of reality and go to college and get a 9 to 5 job, and then she’s able to bring that experience back into her acting,” “In the Loop” director Armando Iannucci says on the phone from London.

Chlumsky grew up in the western suburb of Broadview with her mother Nancy (her parents split when she was 2) and was modeling in Marshall Field’s ads when she was 10 months old. Following the bit part of School Child in John Hughes’ “Uncle Buck” (1989), she landed the lead role of Vada Sultenfuss, the death-obsessed girl growing up in her widower father’s ( Dan Aykroyd) mortuary in Howard Zieff’s “My Girl.” The movie, which drew controversy for killing off Culkin’s character, was a hit, and Chlumsky got the fresh-faced accolades.

But even then she had other goals than being a movie star. “During ‘My Girl’ I wanted to be a horse dentist,” she says. “I wanted to be a paleontologist for a while.”

“She would say, ‘I’m not a star. I don’t want to be a star,’” says her father, Frank Chlumsky, a chef instructor at Kendall College.

“Anna always wanted to be a normal kid. All the while that was going on, she was missing her friends at school.”

She starred in the sequel “My Girl 2″ and was Sissy Spacek’s daughter in “Trading Mom” (both 1994), and she co-starred with Christina Ricci in “Gold Diggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain” the following year. Little did she know that she wouldn’t appear in another widely released theatrical film until “In the Loop.”

The opportunities dwindled in high school, and although she says she was encouraged upon landing a few jobs after starting at the University of Chicago, the auditions were going nowhere, and she realized she’d rather be studying for finals.

The final straw came when she auditioned for a mother-daughter drama at the Steppenwolf Theatre. “I totally froze,” she says. “I was like, ‘You know what? I don’t know how to act, I’m not good at this, I don’t know what I’m doing, and it’s not my calling.’”

She canceled her next scheduled audition, quit paying her Screen Actors Guild dues and after graduating college moved to New York with her now-husband Shaun So with aspirations of becoming a food writer. She wound up feeling more like “a glorified telemarketer” as a fact-checker for Zagat restaurant guides, and although she calls her subsequent gig as an editorial assistant for a HarperCollins science-fiction/fantasy imprint “a blast,” she still felt miserable.

“I was right out of college, still boozing, having horrible, horrible hangovers and going to work the next day,” she recalls. “Just bad news. I was crying a lot. I was crying all the time.”

She was in the middle of one of these crying jags during a lunch break when a sidewalk psychic poked her on the shoulder and said she had a message for her.

“I turned around, ‘What?’” Chlumsky recalls.

“‘I have a question for you: Are you the girl from “My Girl”?’”

“I’m just, like, ‘Ughhh, yes. Yes yes yes yes yes. You’re so psychic,’” Chlumsky says. “But then, because she’s good at her job, she gets me, and she says, ‘You used to want to do this. You’re not done. You still want this.’”

Forty dollars later, Chlumsky had learned what she actually knew all along: She still wanted to act. So she “sheepishly” called her agent, who responded with this advice: “Get some training. You’re an adult now. You need chops now, and you need a technique.”

Says Chlumsky: “For the first time I was receptive to hearing that. Before I was like. ‘No training, I’m a natural.’”

She decided to give her rebooted career a year, but once she acted out her first scene at Atlantic Acting School in Manhattan, she already felt, “Yeah, this is what I want to do. I’m doing it forever.”

Iannucci says he didn’t even know about “My Girl” when Chlumsky arrived at a New York casting session for “In the Loop.” He paired her with Zach Woods, who was vying to play the young British aide Chad, and told them to start improvising insults at each other.

“They could have gone on for half an hour,” the director says. “It was hysterical. She was just very funny, and when I put the two together, it was just perfect, and I thought, I’ve got my Chad and Liza.”

Chlumsky is in the rotating cast (through Sunday) of the Off Broadway show “Love, Loss, and What I Wore,” and she recently shot a pilot for a show called “The Quinn-tuplets” that also features Amber Tamblyn and Molly Parker.

Chlumsky says she hasn’t kept in touch with co-stars such as Culkin, Austin O’Brien (“My Girl 2″) or Ricci, though she did shoot a pilot with “My Girl” co-star Griffin Dunne and reminisced with Aykroyd at a “Saturday Night Live” party. Meanwhile, she’s a working actress in New York, and that’s fine with her.

“Sometimes I’ll be like, oh, what would have happened if I had gone to (study acting at) Juilliard? Oh, would I get more work if I had not taken the break?” she says. “But I did take the break and I’m happy I took the break, and that’s my life, and that’s really cool.”
